Summary

A prequel to the New York Times best-selling novel Queen's Shadow, further exploring the life of the iconic Padmé Amidala
When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace。 To keep her safe and secure, she'll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys。 Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group。
When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test--of themselves, and of each other。

I really enjoyed the focus on how the handmaidens worked together with the Queen as a unit; I wish there was more of that。 The second half gets a bit disjointed as events merge with those of "The Phantom Menace," and it assumes that you've either recently watched the movie or have a photographic memory。 (I had to rewatch parts of it。) I really enjoyed the focus on how the handmaidens worked together with the Queen as a unit; I wish there was more of that。 The second half gets a bit disjointed as events merge with those of "The Phantom Menace," and it assumes that you've either recently watched the movie or have a photographic memory。 (I had to rewatch parts of it。) 。。。more

Gosh I so, so enjoy what the author does with this entire series。 Brings so much light to the incredible female relationships among Padme and her circle。

Queen’s Peril follows the beginning of Padme Amidala’s reign as Queen of Naboo up to the end of The Phantom Menace。 Padme is learning her new and important role as well as training with her new handmaidens and her close friend - and decoy- Sabe。Queen’s Peril dives deep into Naboo politics and how Queen Amidala changed Naboo for the better。 It’s clear from the start why her people loved her so much。 Also, Padme shows qualities that we see in Luke and Leia in future Star Wars media。 Yes, Leia is v Queen’s Peril follows the beginning of Padme Amidala’s reign as Queen of Naboo up to the end of The Phantom Menace。 Padme is learning her new and important role as well as training with her new handmaidens and her close friend - and decoy- Sabe。Queen’s Peril dives deep into Naboo politics and how Queen Amidala changed Naboo for the better。 It’s clear from the start why her people loved her so much。 Also, Padme shows qualities that we see in Luke and Leia in future Star Wars media。 Yes, Leia is very much like her mother, but she has qualities from Anakin。 The same goes for Luke。I loved the handmaidens and how much training was involved。 It was a very difficult job。 They didn’t just copy Padme, but made the Queen Amidala persona a mix of all of them so the decoy could be played by any of them。 Everything form the voice and small gestures were carefully planned out so the decoy could easily switch, even in the middle of an important dinner。 Their friendship is what you expect from a group of 14 year old girls, but they have a level of maturity that is needed for their important roles。 The first half of the book is strong, however, when we get to the overlap of The Phantom Menace, the story felt rushed。 We have already seen these events, so there was little dialogue except for moments that weren’t in the movie。Apart from that I loved this book。 Any Padme and prequel fan will enjoy it too。My Rating: 4。75 starsStarted Reading: 30/06/2022Finished Reading: 01/07/2022 。。。more

The 3 things I love the most have been combined into Queen’s Peril。 Sci-fi, YA, and Star Wars。 Mix in a character I’ve always loved and desperately wanted to know more about and you’ve got yourself a book that could potentially land in my favorites of all time。 It’s safe to say, this book delivers the high hopes I had for it and much more。 The handmaiden's intentionally similar names were a tad tricky to get used to when I first began the novel, but the novel does such a great job at differentia The 3 things I love the most have been combined into Queen’s Peril。 Sci-fi, YA, and Star Wars。 Mix in a character I’ve always loved and desperately wanted to know more about and you’ve got yourself a book that could potentially land in my favorites of all time。 It’s safe to say, this book delivers the high hopes I had for it and much more。 The handmaiden's intentionally similar names were a tad tricky to get used to when I first began the novel, but the novel does such a great job at differentiating them, it didn’t take me long to get up to speed with who was who。I absolutely love the characterization of the handmaidens。 The interactions between the handmaidens and Padme are realistic and really drive the point that yes, they have a big role in society but they are teenage girls。 They have their quiffs and difficulties that anyone who was or is a teenage girl can relate to。 The realism in their interactions and the bond they form really moved me。Overall, the journey this book took me on was amazing。 I felt it did an excellent job of capturing what sisterhood is like between young women。 However, this is a YA book。 If YA isn’t the type of genre of books you enjoy, I would skip this book。 As a lover of YA novels, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially with the added sci-fi and Star Wars elements! I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Star Wars, YA, or Sci-Fi。 The YA element might be a dealbreaker for fans of other Star Wars novels but I would certainly give it a try if you’re interested in Padme and the handmaiden's story。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book, it really shows the beginning of Queen Amidala, and the transition of Padme becoming a public figure trying to effect change in Naboo and the wider galaxy。 It also introduces us to the handmaidens, their back stories and individual motivations for becoming Padme's guards/doubles。 The chapters with perspectives from Palpatine's POV were very well written, you really get the cold and evil calculating vibes from him。 Once again like the first book very much reminds me more of a I enjoyed this book, it really shows the beginning of Queen Amidala, and the transition of Padme becoming a public figure trying to effect change in Naboo and the wider galaxy。 It also introduces us to the handmaidens, their back stories and individual motivations for becoming Padme's guards/doubles。 The chapters with perspectives from Palpatine's POV were very well written, you really get the cold and evil calculating vibes from him。 Once again like the first book very much reminds me more of a short story。 It just felt incomplete and I rounded down to 3/5 when it's about a 3。5/5 because I don't see myself rereading it and while I enjoyed the overlap with Phantom Menace it's just not that memorable overall。 。。。more

Absolutely loved this! It gave me everything I wanted for a Star Wars book, I learned so much about Padme and her hand maidens and even had a sprinkle of all our other favorite characters as well。 I am so excited to continue with this series, the author did a fabulous job of showing us what everything was like from Padme’s perspective and it was so cool to see how brave and committed to her country she is。

Not my favorite Star Wars novel, nor my favorite EK Johnston book in particular。 I think the challenge of this one was that many of the events took place simultaneously as The Phantom Menace but refused to rehash any of the details, so the ending felt rushed and incomplete even though I know Episode I like the back of my hand。 It’s hard to be confined to an existing story and try to add more details and characterization。 The first half of the book, however, takes place just after Padme is electe Not my favorite Star Wars novel, nor my favorite EK Johnston book in particular。 I think the challenge of this one was that many of the events took place simultaneously as The Phantom Menace but refused to rehash any of the details, so the ending felt rushed and incomplete even though I know Episode I like the back of my hand。 It’s hard to be confined to an existing story and try to add more details and characterization。 The first half of the book, however, takes place just after Padme is elected and was much more enjoyable。 I love Padme and it’s always great to get more information about her (and learning more about the politics of Naboo never hurts!)。 Seeing her bond with her handmaidens and do teenage girl things was a delight。 She deserves all the happiness。 Overall, though, Queen’s Shadow was much better。As usual, Johnston weaves in queer characters very naturally, which I like。 I also really enjoyed the parallelism of the first and last italic sections。 I also liked that there was a brief reference to Corde。 。。。more

Definitely a fun & quick read that made me want to watch Star Wars Episode I again。 It's nice to get the background behind Padme's handmaidens and to understand what happened on Naboo when Queen Amidala was on Coruscant。 To be able to go into the heads of all the characters to see what's going on was enlightening, to say the least。 Definitely a fun & quick read that made me want to watch Star Wars Episode I again。 It's nice to get the background behind Padme's handmaidens and to understand what happened on Naboo when Queen Amidala was on Coruscant。 To be able to go into the heads of all the characters to see what's going on was enlightening, to say the least。 。。。more

A prequel to EK Johnsons first Padme based book。 Basing itself around her coronation, the assembling of her team of handmaidens and the struggled in which Naboo faced during the events of The Phantom Menace。I really feel like I need to read Queens Shadow again now, to see if there's any slight nuances or relationships that I mightve missed after going through this one。 This book makes each individual handmaiden feel a lot more important than they were in the debut novel, rather than just Sabe (w A prequel to EK Johnsons first Padme based book。 Basing itself around her coronation, the assembling of her team of handmaidens and the struggled in which Naboo faced during the events of The Phantom Menace。I really feel like I need to read Queens Shadow again now, to see if there's any slight nuances or relationships that I mightve missed after going through this one。 This book makes each individual handmaiden feel a lot more important than they were in the debut novel, rather than just Sabe (who still has a big role don't get me wrong)。 It's interesting seeing a lot of the different perspectives on situations that were familiar with and I think Johnson does a great job at adding little pieces of lore and examination to situations that we've become very familiar with over the years。Can't wait to read the third book, and Ahsoka。 。。。more

I liked this one quite a bit more than the first。 I really enjoyed reading about Panaka interviewing the potential handmaidens, learning more of their personalities than we did in the first one, and the girls and Padme getting to know each other。 I know some people might have been interested in the events of Phantom Menace, and it was sort of interesting to read about it from a different perspective, but also I'm kind of tired of it。 :) I liked this one quite a bit more than the first。 I really enjoyed reading about Panaka interviewing the potential handmaidens, learning more of their personalities than we did in the first one, and the girls and Padme getting to know each other。 I know some people might have been interested in the events of Phantom Menace, and it was sort of interesting to read about it from a different perspective, but also I'm kind of tired of it。 :) 。。。more

You really need to watch the movie in order to understand the book, especially the last third。 I like how this story explains how the plan to have the handmaidens / bodyguards switch roles with the queen。 I would have like to hear about Padme's impression of Anakin when she first meets him。 You really need to watch the movie in order to understand the book, especially the last third。 I like how this story explains how the plan to have the handmaidens / bodyguards switch roles with the queen。 I would have like to hear about Padme's impression of Anakin when she first meets him。 。。。more

The ending of this book got me crying though。 Why did she have to do that。 😭😭

More or less a companion piece to 'The Phantom Menace', E。K。 Johnston creates a perfect internal logic to the political traditions of Naboo and shows us all the reasons why Padmé was so beloved。The highlight, however, are the handmaidens surrounding the Queen herself。 The first half of 'Queen's Peril' reads like a thriller, a Star Wars 'Ocean's 11', where a ragtag group of misfits with unique skills gets recruited to an elite team。 Each handmaiden is a blast, adding a richness to the characters More or less a companion piece to 'The Phantom Menace', E。K。 Johnston creates a perfect internal logic to the political traditions of Naboo and shows us all the reasons why Padmé was so beloved。The highlight, however, are the handmaidens surrounding the Queen herself。 The first half of 'Queen's Peril' reads like a thriller, a Star Wars 'Ocean's 11', where a ragtag group of misfits with unique skills gets recruited to an elite team。 Each handmaiden is a blast, adding a richness to the characters and stories we thought we knew while individually establishing themselves as formidable politicians, spies, inventors, and designers。 I'm looking forward to what each of the handmaidens do just as much as I want to know more about Padmé。The novel lacks a solid plot, but does serve as a series terrific additions to the lore of Star Wars, and Johnston's navigation of complex teenage relationships and desires is a refreshing look at close, intimate friendships in the big, wide galaxy。 。。。more
